Exhibition1
Heinz Isler Models

The exhibition “Heinz Isler Models” focuses on Isler’s design methods. It features original documents from the gta Archive, including physical models, drawings, photographs, and videos that he took from the construction sites of his buildings. “Heinz Isler Models” is curated by Dr. Giulia Boller and it is a collaboration between the Chair of the Theory of Architecture, Block Research Group, gta Archive, gta Exhibitions with the support of the NCCR Digital Fabrication and the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS).

Giulia Boller is a lecturer and postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich. She is both an engineer and an architect. Giulia’s research interests lie at the interface between history, architecture and structural engineering disciplines. In 2022 she completed a doctoral thesis at ETH Zurich on the role of the models in Heinz Isler’s engineering practice. Her doctoral thesis has recently received the 2023 Lino Gentilini Award for the best doctoral dissertation in the history of engineering and the ETH Medal for outstanding doctoral thesis. Giulia gained professional experience at Renzo Piano Building Workshop. She graduated with honors in Building Engineering and Architecture at the University of Trento (Italy) in 2015.

Exhibition2
Competition and Exhibition of Innovative Lightweight Structures

The Working Group 21 presents a competition and outdoor-exhibition of innovative lightweight pavilions at the 2024 IASS Symposium. Featured are pavilions designed by IASS 2024 participants. The exhibition aims to narrow the gap between concept and execution, providing a platform for researchers to exchange knowledge and demonstrate applications of advanced manufacturing and materials. The focus is on several key manufacturing processes, including additive manufacturing, casting and molding, connections, subtractive manufacturing, robotics, smart materials, textile technology, and surface treatment.  The competition has been held during IASSS several times showcasing the latest research and developments in advanced manufacturing and materials.

Exhibition3
SMG-Show/Touch/Tell[SMG-S&T]

Model making plays a pivotal role in architecture and engineering, particularly in exploring and understanding structural morphology. At the IASS 2024 Symposium in Zürich, the Structural Morphology Group presents an experimental format showcasing physical models created by IASS participants. Under the title SMG-Show/Touch/Tell [SMG-S&T], IASS 2024 participants are displaying a physical model to this year’s venue and share their inspiration with the rest of the community. The exhibition provides a unique opportunity to engage with the creative processes and innovative designs of fellow professionals, fostering a deeper understanding of structural morphology through tactile interaction and collaborative exchange.
